Addiction is a progressive and debilitating disorder consisting of a physical dependency and a psychological obsession. Addiction can be identified by a strong need or compulsion to use mood-altering substances such as alcohol or drugs to achieve a desired ‘pay-off’! This ‘pay-off’ can also be obtained by excessive behaviour patterns such as gambling, exercise, shopping or work. There becomes an increasing need to engage in these addictive behaviours, and as a result, life becomes more difficult, the family is affected and depression sets in.
ADDICTION TO ALCOHOL
People drink for many different reasons, for example:
- to feel good.
- to boost their confidence.
- to relax.
- to socialise.
- to help cope with life’s problems.
Can you associate your drinking with any of the above?
OR
- Has your family ever commented unfavourably about your drinking?
- Have you ever been in trouble with the law because of your drinking?
- Has your health been affected by your use of alcohol?
- Is your drinking affecting your financial situation?
- Does your drinking hinder you from performing your job to the best of your ability?
- Have your personal relationships been affected by your use of alcohol?
If you have answered YES to any of the above statements you may well have an addiction problem, and should be thinking about taking a positive step to deal with this important issue.
