Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a debilitating condition. People with OCD suffer from compulsions or obsessions that are repeated endlessly. Compulsions are the need to perform a series of actions and obsessions are thoughts that take control of the sufferer’s mind.
Often a ritual is carried out to deal with the anxiety caused in response to obsessional thoughts.
Symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Signs of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder may include ritual checking, cleaning or avoidance of certain objects or materials
Common examples include:
- Continually making sure something is switched off or closed
- Obsessive washing or cleaning
- Avoiding items which are imagined to be contaminated in some way
Daily life can be greatly disturbed as a consequence. Severe anxiety results if a ritual cannot be completed for whatever reason. The sufferer then feels compelled to start the ritual all over again.
