Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a type of Anxiety Disorder that occurs after someone is exposed to or experiences some kind of traumatic event.
PTSD can be caused by exposure to a variety of different traumatic events associated with serious accidents, rape, events of war, childhood trauma, natural disasters and physical attack.
Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
A variety of symptoms make up a PTSD diagnosis which can be both psychological and physical. These may include:
- Reliving the experience through flashbacks and nightmares
- Difficulty in concentrating
- Difficulty sleeping
- Irritability
- Painful emotions including Anxiety, guilt and anger
PTSD may precipitate other psychiatric Disorders such as Depression, alcohol abuse and drug dependency.
Treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Following assessment by a Consultant Psychiatrist at The Manor Clinic an individual treatment plan to address the PTSD symptoms will be devised and may involve treatment for any associated illness such as Alcohol or Drug Addiction or Depression.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) & EMDR as recommended by the NICE Guidelines are the treatments of choice. These reduce or eliminate the distressing memories, and help the sufferer regain control of their life.
